Our Nigerian Dairy Goat Herd...
|
We are very proud of our milking herd of Nigerian Dairy Goats -- the first commercial goat dairy in the United States based solely on the Nigerian Dairy Goat. We can't say enough about this wonderful dairy breed -- our Nigerians, with their wonderful milk high in butterfat and protein, are the secret to our delicious award-winning goat's milk yogurt and all our other dairy delights!

We manage our herd organically according to National Organic Practices standards, which includes 100% organic feed and access to pasture and browse at all times. All of our does and bucks are registered with the American Dairy Goat Association (ADGA) and all of our milking does & doelings with two exceptions are certified organic at present. While we do not generally show our herd, we do track our does' milk production by participating in milk test through DHIR, and we particpate in ADGA's Linear Appraisal program annually.

We are also members of the Maine Cattle Health Assurance Program (MeCHAP) and disease test our herd annually. Our entire herd was tested in July 2005 and all tested negative for CAE, Johnes, CL, Brucelosis & TB. All our adult herd members tested negative for Johne's by ELISA testing and fecal testing in March 2006. We continue to test all our herd members over two years of age for all of these diseases on an annual rolling basis and to date all tests have returned negative. Hooray!

Our herd is now closed -- which means new goats are not entering it. We do this for our herd's biosecurity and also for our certified organic status. It all helps us to ensure that the dairy products and/or the goats you purchase from us are as healthy as possible for you and/or your farm.

We are currently offering some adult does for sale as we strive to keep a small-size milking herd and work to make room for promising youngsters. If you are looking for an immediate milk supply for your homestead or dairy, please consider one of our ladies for your needs. We also have several doelings and wethers currently available from our 2008 kiddings and are taking reservations for our October 2008 kids-- we now have lovely kids bouncing around the farm! Many of these are for sale as we retain only a handful each year, and our February group of kids are ready to leave the farm. Our June kids will be ready to leave in mid August.
Feel free to download our current sales list or our 2008/2009 kidding schedule, and please contact us if you would like to learn more about Nigerian Dairy Goats or are interested in purchasing from our herd. We are happy to e-mail or mail you more information on their care and on our sales.
